NOTICES TO THE BAR REGARDING CHARACTER AND FITNESS QUESTIONNAIRE
On September 19, 2023, the Supreme Court adopted changes to the Character and Fitness Questionnaire to narrow the scope of inquiry into candidates' mental health in the bar admissions process. Click here for the Notice.
On February 2, 2024, the Supreme Court adopted changes to the Character and Fitness Questionnaire to make clear that the scope of the inquiry into a candidate's prior filing of retraining orders or Title IX actions during the bar admissions process is narrow. Click here for the Notice.
Committee on Character Regulations Amended
The Supreme Court of New Jersey has adopted certain amendments to the Regulations Governing the Committee on Character. Under Rule 1:25, the Committee on Character is charged with determining the good character and fitness of candidates for admission to practice law in New Jersey. The Committee on Character is authorized to prescribe Regulations governing its practice and procedures, subject to the approval of the Supreme Court. The Regulations were last amended on July 1, 2017, as a result of recommendations by the Ad Hoc Committee on the Character Review Process concerning proposed amendments regarding the stipulations of conditions by consent. The Amendments made are as a result of further recommendations of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Character Review Process and public comment to its report. The Amendments announced by this notice are to Regulations 202.6, 202:7, 202:8, 202:9, 202:10, 302:1, 304:1, 304:5, 402:3 and 501. These amendments are effective May 1, 2022.
