DISCIPLINARY HISTORY

I have been admitted to the NJ bar and I am applying for admission to another state. How do I get a Disciplinary History also known as  a Certificate of Ethical Conduct? stating that no charges have been filed against me?

Disciplinary histories are available from the Office of Attorney Ethics (not the Board of Bar Examiners). You must request the letter in writing.

Please visit:https://www.njcourts.gov/attorneys/attorney-ethics-and-discipline, and click 'Certificates and Forms' to find their contact information under 'Request Certificate of Ethical Conduct' and other related information.

GOOD STANDING CERTIFICATE / ALTERNATIVE STATUS LETTERS

NOTES:

(1) Disciplinary histories are available from the Office of Attorney Ethics (not the Board of Bar Examiners), so please visit: https://www.njcourts.gov/attorneys/attorney-ethics-and-discipline for contact information.

(2) Pro hac vice: Attorneys permitted to appear pro hac vice are not eligible for a Certificate of Good Standing from the New Jersey Supreme Court.

New online process!

  • Requests for Certificates of Good Standing or other attorney status documents should be submitted through the NJ Courts Annual Attorney Registration and Payment System. Requested document(s) can be received promptly via email or in hardcopy format through U.S. Postal Service or expediting shipping (typically within three business days). Fees are detailed in the online application.
  • The attorney’s Bar ID must be used to log onto the system to view/access the Attorney Registration tile. Use the 'Good Standing Certificate/Alternative Status Documents' tile to submit your request.

  • Please note that recipient information can be modified as desired to have the document(s) directly sent to the attorney or another person or agency. For step-by-step instructions for submitting a request, the Quick Reference Guide can be found at: Attorney Registration - Application for Cert of Good Standing, Etc. Also, please use the following link to maintain up-to-date attorney contact information: Confirm or Update Contact Information - Attorney Registration.

Below are some helpful tips for accessing the 'Good Standing Certificate/Alternative Status Documents' tile via the Attorney Registration and Payment system.

  • Be sure that: (1) Chrome or Edge is the browser being used; and (2) if using a mobile device, scroll down far enough to see to the 'Good Standing Certificate/Alternative Status Documents' tile which is usually one of the last tiles.
  • If you cannot locate the 'Good Standing Certificate/Alternative Status Documents' tile: (1) The attorney’s Bar ID (not a JEDS ID) must be used to log onto the Attorney Registration and Payment application to view/access the Attorney Registration tile which then will give access to 'Good Standing Certificate/Alternative Status Documents' tile; (2) the Bar ID & password should be entered as opposed to using saved login information or a shared computer to populate the fields; and (3) it is strongly suggested that the attorney clears his Cache before retrying login (instructions for clearing the Cache).

  • If you see a red banner at top of Attorney Registration and Payment screen: While the attorney may not have access to Registration and Payment application; he or she can still access to the 'Good Standing Certificate/Alternative Status Documents' tile.

  • If the attorney does not receive an on-screen transaction completion confirmation (green banner): The request may not have been completed and submitted; the attorney should check the ‘My Submissions’ tile to find pending requests in the ‘Certificate Requests’ tab. If there is a request pending payment, it can be completed from that tab. NOTE: First, be sure to close application and allow approximately 30-minutes before clearing the Cache and then relaunching the application to log back in to complete the pending request.

  • If you receive any type of error message: The Cache must be cleared, particularly after any error message is received (instructions for clearing the Cache).

For further assistance with accessing the system, please call 609-421-6100 (Judiciary Statewide Call Center) for help during business hours. NOTE: The Board of Bar Examiners does not manage or support the Attorney Registration and Payment system.

REINSTATEMENT

My license has been administratively revoked. How can I get my license reinstated?

Administratively revoked attorneys must either Petition the Court for reinstatement or must reapply to the bar for admission via examination or admission on Motion.

For guidance about the option to petition, please review the May 30, 2008, Notice to the Bar which can be found here. Please note the following guidance to be read in conjunction with this notice.

The current filing fee for a petition for reinstatement is $50.00, payable to the Treasurer, State of New Jersey along with a check in the amount of $375.00, payable to the New Jersey Board of Bar Examiners, for administrative costs. An additional check in the amount of $375.00, will be payable to the New Jersey Board of Bar Examiners, if the petition is ultimately granted.

A timely petition for reinstatement of an administratively revoked license shall be filed and served within sixty days of the publication of the Supreme Court's Order of revocation.

If not filed timely, the petition must be accompanied by a motion seeking leave of the Court to file as within time and should explain the reasons for the petitioner’s failure to timely file.

Information regarding the application for admission via examination or admission on Motion can be found at: New Jersey Board of Bar Examiners - Application Information (njbarexams.org).

I am administratively ineligible to practice law in New Jersey because I am not current with my obligations to the Lawyers Fund for Client Protection (Lawyer’s Fund), to the Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts Fund of the Bar of New Jersey (IOLTA), or for compliance with requirements of the Board on Continuing Legal Education (CLE). How do I become eligible to practice in New Jersey?

If you are administratively ineligible for failure to pay fees owed to the Lawyer's Fund for Client Protection, you must contact the Lawyer's Fund at 855-533-3862 or via email at: lfcp.mbx@njcourts.gov to obtain information on fees owed.

If you are administratively ineligible for failure to comply with mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements, you must contact the Board on Continuing Legal Education at 609-815-2930 or via email at: sctcle.mailbox@njcourts.gov.

If you are administratively ineligible for failure to maintain attorney trust account(s) as required by IOLTA, you must address your IOLTA compliance or any related questions to IOLTA at 732-247-8222 or via email: info@ioltanj.org.
